About

Our story

How the lab began, how students learn by doing, and who joined and what happened in each academic year.

How the lab began

Over a decade ago, founder ir. Johan Woudstra started the lab, then called the Gelijkspanningslab. Its first research followed the move from alternating to direct current in household appliances: the DC Home.

Today researchers Peter van Duijsen (modelling and simulation) and Diëgo Zuidervliet (hardware design and power electronics) lead DC Power Laboratory 2.0.

The lab has grown into a power electronics research group working on high-power converters, digital twins and ways to control and protect commercial-scale DC grids.

Learning by doing

Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics and Industrial Design Engineering students look for technical solutions together, on one platform.

MBO
Practical build, soldering and precise construction of the hardware prototypes.
HBO
Systems integration, embedded control software and the engineering design.
Master
Advanced control theory, simulation and grid management.

Together they build demonstrators and write international IEEE publications.

The lab, year by year

Each academic year the whole lab poses for one photo.
